MOTORCYCLE, PICKUP TRUCK INVOLVED IN FATAL COLLISION

According to Venus Police Chief R.L. Young, the collision involved a motorcycle and a pickup truck, and at the time of the accident, both vehicles were traveling east on Highway 67. The two vehicles ended up colliding, and the pickup truck rolled several times, finally coming to a rest in the center median. Young reported that, after the initial accident, a third vehicle drove by and struck some debris in the roadway. The driver lost control and drove into a ditch alongside the road, but did not suffer any injuries. The driver of the pickup, a 43-year-old man from Dallas, was airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital with serious injuries. The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

COMMON CAUSES OF MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

There are any number of circumstances in which a motorcycle accident can occur, but some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents are: speeding, other vehicles traveling too closely behind a motorcycle, the failure of another vehicle to notice a motorcycle, or another driver misjudging the distance and speed of a motorcycle. In many motorcycle accident cases, drivers of passenger cars strike motorcycles while attempting to pass another vehicle or when making a left turn in front of a motorcycle. According to national statistics, roughly 80% of motorcycle accidents injure or kill a motorcyclist, while only 20% of passenger car accidents injure or kill a driver or passenger in the vehicle.

Because motorcycles have a smaller profile and offer riders less protection that most other vehicles, motorcyclists are far more likely to be injured or killed in an accident than occupants in passenger cars or trucks. In fact, statistics show that motorcycles are involved in fatal wrecks at a rate of 35 per 100 million miles of travel, compared to a rate of only 1.7 per 100 million miles of travel for passenger cars. In 2006, motorcycle riders were 35 times more likely than passenger car occupants to be killed in an accident per vehicle miles traveled, and eight times more likely to be injured.
