Texas Driver Killed In Wrong-Way Accident In Corpus Christi

The Texas man killed in a deadly car accident in Corpus Christi earlier this month has been identified as 68-year-old Jimmy Koch, who family members say worked locally as a sandblaster. Koch died on the morning of December 11, when a wrong-way driver crashed into his vehicle near the Bear Lane exit on Highway 358 in Corpus Christi. DRIVER FACING INTOXICATION MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES

The deadly Texas car accident took place at about 4:30 a.m. on Highway 358 West between Agnes Street and West Point Road, as Jimmy Koch was driving west on the highway. According to police, an alleged drunk driver, identified as Julian Padron, was traveling east on the westbound side of the highway when his Toyota Camry slammed into a Ford Fiesta driven by Koch. Police believe Padron may have been intoxicated at the time of the fatal car accident in Corpus Christi, and a spokesperson with the Corpus Christi Police Department says an investigation into intoxication manslaughter charges is underway.

SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER CALLED CAB, DIDN’T TAKE IT

In the days following the wrong-way accident that killed Jimmy Koch, it was discovered that the driver that allegedly caused the collision had attended his company’s Christmas party at a downtown bar in Corpus Christi, and had called a taxi cab for a ride home but decided at the last minute to drive himself. A taxi driver with Green-N-Go Cabs said he received a call from Padron asking for a ride home from a restaurant near the bar where Padron’s Christmas party was held, but when he arrived at the location, Padron refused a ride, so the taxi driver took Padron’s friend home instead. Padron’s friend allegedly told the man to stay where he was and “sober up” before going home, but he apparently decided to get behind the wheel anyway.

Jimmy Koch was pronounced dead at the scene of the Texas wrong-way accident, and after being cut out of his vehicle by local firefighters, Padron was transported to the hospital with serious leg injuries. The deadly car accident in Corpus Christi is eerily similar to a fatal wreck that took place in almost the exact same spot on Highway 358 back in June 2011, when 22-year-old Jonathan Palacios left a bar on Leopard and then drove the wrong way on the highway and struck a vehicle driven by Bryant Hernandez head-on, killing them both.
