Reduce Your Risk of a Car Crash

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 20,160 people lost their lives due to car accidents in the first six months of 2021. That’s an increase of 18.4% compared to 2020. The NHTSA also reported that the high rate of fatalities between March 2020 through June 2021 involved speeding incidents and traveling without a seat belt or child safety restraint.

Additionally, data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) states that in 2020 there were 3,896 fatalities statewide, which was an increase of 7.5% compared to 2019. Most crashes are preventable, and because of this, The TXDOT has been running the #EndTheStreakTX campaign since 2015 to spread awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

No matter how much experience you may have behind the wheel, refreshing your car safety knowledge is always a good idea. While you can’t predict the actions of other drivers, driving defensively and sticking to good driving habits can decrease your risk of being involved in a motor vehicle crash. Wear Your Seat Belt

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 15,000 lives are saved every year because drivers and passengers are wearing seat belts at the time they get into a car accident.

Avoid Distractions

Texting, talking on the phone, sending emails, or searching for directions on a smartphone all distract you from the task of driving. Never look at or use your smartphone while driving.

Install Car Seats Properly

The NHTSA recommends that children be secured in a car seat appropriate for their age, height, and weight. Children should remain in the backseat until age 12.

Obey All Rules of the Road

Rules of the road were put in place for a reason — to keep everyone safe. Always follow posted speed limits and obey local traffic laws, including those around schools and public areas.
