Two Dead, Dozens Injured in Weimar Bus Crash

Bus accidentTwo people have been killed and over a dozen people have been injured after a bus crashed into an 18-wheeler big rig near Weimar, Texas. The crash occurred on Interstate 10, when the bus driver wasn’t paying attention to the traffic slowing in a construction area. The bus crashed into the back of the big rig, causing the tractor-trailer to hit a car, and pushing that car into an SUV.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the bus driver tried to stop, but it was too late. The bus driver and a passenger who was ejected from the front of the bus were killed in the crash. The injured victims were taken to hospitals in Columbus and La Grange, while others were treated by Emergency Medical Services crews at a nearby high school. A Houston woman, Susan James, was in the car that was smashed between the big rig and the SUV. James’ car was crushed, but remarkably she was not injured in the crash. “It started spinning me around and I just put my head down under my arms and um, rode it out,” stated James. “I’ll probably break down when I get home. I’m just really calm about it, don’t ask me why,” she continued. “I just think God was watching out for me and I had an angel sitting on my shoulder.”

The bus is owned by the company Transportes Del Norte, which transports people between Mexico and several United States cities. This particular bus was headed to Greensboro, North Carolina. The main causes of bus and truck related accidents are driver fatigue, inadequate training, poor maintenance or bad equipment, driving at excessive speeds, unsecure loads, and unsafe road conditions. Although statistics show that commercial trucks and buses cause 3% of injury-causing motor vehicle accidents, trucking and bus accidents typically cause more severe injuries and more fatalities due to the large size and heavy weight of these vehicles.

Determining liability is an important factor in collecting the financial compensation you deserve after sustaining injuries in a trucking accident. To prove harm done, the injuries must be directly related to the truck or bus accident. These types of accidents typically result in devastating injury and in tragic cases like this one, fatalities. An experienced personal injury attorney can help injured victims collect the financial compensation they deserve for their injuries, medical expenses, loss of past and future income, and pain and suffering.
