First Distracted Driving Summit In Texas Attracts National Attention
7 May 2012No Comments
April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), law enforcement, and federal and state officials, gathered to participate in the first Texas Distracted Driving Summit held in San Antonio, TX on April 26. More than 200 participants, including physicians and businesses, attended the event and pledged to be a part of the effort to curb distracted driving, a serious issue that results in tragic injury and loss of life in Texas and across the country every year. According to statistics, nearly one in four accidents in Texas involves driver distraction, leading to life-altering injuries like traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, paralysis, and even death. Distracted Driving “Epidemic” Sweeping the Nation
At the Texas Distracted Driving Summit, victims’ families shared their tragic stories, academics discussed the science and research behind distracted driving, and physicians weighed in on the traumatic injuries resulting from distracted driving. “Today’s Texas Distracted Driving Summit is a reminder of how far we’ve come in just the last three years in combating America’s distracted driving epidemic – and how far we still have to go,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. “I am grateful to all the advocates who are working tirelessly here in Texas to remind drivers to keep their eyes on the road, their hands on the wheel and their focus on driving.”
Personal Injuries And Fatalities Caused By Distracted Driving
In 2011, more than 81,000 Texas accidents involved some type of distraction or driver inattention, and 361 of these collisions were fatal. “Today’s dialogue is an important step for the state of Texas in fighting distracted driving,” said Carol T. Rawson, TxDOT’s Traffic Operations division director. “Each of us has a role in changing this behavior, and we look forward to working with out private sector partners to increase awareness around the state.” In an effort to reduce distracted driving in the state, TxDOT is continuing its “Talk. Text. Crash.” campaign launched last year to increase awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. The summit is a new aspect of the campaign, providing an opportunity for many different organizations to share information about preventing distracted driving.

“Distracted driving is a completely preventable yet widespread problem,” said Maj. Gen. Kevin Bergner, retired, and president, USAA Property and Casualty Group. “It’s incumbent on all of us with a stake in highway safety to be indignant about this behavior so it becomes as socially unacceptable as drunk driving.” Unfortunately, until this is the case, thousands of accidents in Texas and across the country will be caused by distracted driving annually, leading to severe injuries and hundreds of fatalities each year.
