Oil Field AccidentAccording to the Hockley County Sheriff’s Office, a worker was transported to an area hospital after being involved in an oilfield accident at an Oxy Lease on Wildcat Road, south of Farm to Market Road 1585. Ray Scifres, captain of the Law Enforcement Division in Hockley County, reported that a 42-year-old man was brought by Levelland EMS to University Medical Center with injuries resulting from a blowout on a carbon dioxide (CO2) line. Oilfield accidents result in some of the most serious, and often deadly, injuries in Texas and across the United States. Workplace Accident Investigated By OSHA

The accident occurred on December 6th at an oil well while workers were sampling oil quality, and resulted from a valve that was severed from tubing. Due to the fact that a workplace injury resulted from the incident, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be the lead investigator into the oilfield accident. Due to their daily contact with flammable liquids, heavy machinery and other dangerous tools, oilfield workers are at an increased risk of injury and death from workplace accidents in the oil and gas industry, which have risen at an alarming rate in recent years. Between 2002 and 2007, at least 598 workers died on the job, and during that period, the number of fatalities per year nearly doubled from 72 workers killed in 2002 to 125 killed in 2006.
