A Texas man is recovering from burns across more than 40% of his body, including on his face, arms, hands and torso, after a natural gas explosion in his garage last weekend. Eduardo Maltos and his wife, Maria, filed a personal injury lawsuit against CenterPoint Energy on March 12, claiming that the energy company was negligent in failing to enforce appropriate maintenance and safety protocol that could have prevented the devastating accident. Severe Burn Injuries Possibly Caused By Negligence
According to the lawsuit, Maltos was working in his garage when a natural gas explosion occurred, causing a fire on the property. As a result of the fire, the complaint states, Maltos sustained extensive burn injuries and is now in the intensive care unit of an area hospital in critical condition, with second- and third-degree burns covering his body. The Houston Fire Department responded to the explosion and fire on Maltos’ property around 10 a.m., and CenterPoint workers were called to check for a gas leak.
According to CenterPoint spokesperson Alicia Dixon, crews responded to the natural gas incident at Maltos’ house on March 9 and shut off gas services and made the area safe for the Maltos family and surrounding residents. CenterPoint has reported that is it conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Dixon said earlier this week that a conclusion had not been reached as to the cause of the explosion. In his lawsuit, Maltos is seeking damages for CenterPoint’s alleged negligence and for the injuries the Texas man suffered as a result.
