The dump truck involved in the fatal accident was registered to Rizo Trucking of Garland, Texas, and the driver was traveling through a construction zone when traffic slowed. According to the accident report, the driver, who was in the far right lane, took “faulty evasive action by improperly braking and steering to the left.” He lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the concrete barrier, pinning the Lexus and the Mazda underneath the dump truck. Tarleton Mullikin, 83, and Benna Mullikin, 81, were in the Lexus at the time of the accident and both were pronounced dead at the scene. The other trapped driver, Daniel Cerean, suffered minor injuries, and the drivers of two other cars involved in the wreck were not injured.
In the aftermath of the fatal car accident, a spokesperson for the LBJ Express construction project stated that, “though the investigation is ongoing, we can confirm that the trucking company involved is known to have been a subcontractor on the LBJ Express project.” It is unclear as yet whether the dump truck driver will be charged in connection with the two deaths.
