The Deadliest Highway in Texas

The Hazards of Texas Roadways

According to a KBTX news report, traffic fatalities are on the rise in 2021. The latest data shows that as of May 19, 2021, more than 208,000 crashes were reported statewide in the past year, and 3,893 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2020, up from 3,623 fatalities in 2019.

However, I-45 is particularly problematic. Here’s why.

Why Are Crashes Occurring More on I-45?

I-45, which runs north and south, has claimed too many lives. Chron.com reports that not only is I-45 the most dangerous in all of the U.S., it’s also the most dangerous road in the world. The most hazardous part of I-45 is the stretch that runs through Houston. Here are the most common reasons for crashes on I-45:

  • Reckless driving (speeding, tailgating, etc.)

  • Traffic and congestion

  • Distracted driving (texting and driving, talking on the phone while driving)

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol

How Can You Stay Safer on Texas Roads

No matter what road you drive on, it’s critical to practice defensive driving habits to keep you and other motorists safe. Here are some tips:

  • Stay focused on the task of driving

  • Be aware of what other drivers are doing around you

  • Don’t ride too close behind other drivers

  • Use signals when making lane changes

  • Limit distractions such as keeping your cell phone off while driving
