Paxil, Other Antidepressants Linked to Gastrointestinal Bleeding Problems

PaxilAccording to the findings of an important new study, Paxil and other popular antidepressant medications may double patients’ risk of gastrointestinal bleeding problems. The study was published in the January issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and in it, the researchers found a nearly two-times increased risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) among some patients who took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants like Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft. If you have experienced one or more potential side effects of Paxil, contact our knowledgeable Paxil attorneys at Bandas Law Firm today to explore your possible compensation options.

Researchers involved in the antidepressant research looked at 22 studies involving more than one million subjects as part of the meta-analysis and found that patients who took SSRI antidepressants like Paxil, Prozac, Celexa and Zoloft had a 55% higher risk of developing UGIB, compared to patients who didn’t take an SSRI. Furthermore, patients who took an SSRI antidepressant in combination with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like Advil or Motrin, or in combination with a blood thinner like Xarelto or Plavix, had nearly double the risk of suffering gastrointestinal bleeding problems.

Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Prozac belong to a popular class of antidepressant medications known as SSRIs, which are commonly used to treat depression and anxiety disorders, and are among the most widely-used pharmaceutical drugs in the United States. In recent years, however, a growing body of research has identified SSRI antidepressant use as a risk factor for serious side effects, potentially putting patients at an increased risk for brain bleeds, surgical complications, abnormal heart rhythms and sudden death. SSRI antidepressant use during pregnancy is particularly controversial, as the medications have been linked to a higher risk of serious birth defects among babies exposed to the drugs in utero.

Paxil maker GlaxoSmithKline and the companies responsible for manufacturing other SSRI antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft face a growing number of product liability lawsuits filed on behalf of former users who have suffered devastating side effects from the drugs, including gastrointestinal bleeding problems.
