According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of death for teens in the U.S. One of the top risk factors for teens is distracted driving. A 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Study revealed that 39% of high school students who drove admitted to texting or emailing while driving at least once 30 days before the survey.
In this latest distracted driving report, researchers from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety examined data from nearly 7,000 videos taken by cameras mounted in the vehicles of teen drivers and found that distracted driving was the cause of auto accidents in more than six out of 10 cases. Their findings included a review of nearly 1,700 moderate or severe wrecks involving teen drivers between 16 and 19. Based on these findings, the number of teen accidents caused by distracted driving was four times higher than the projected figures based on initial police reports.
