WORKER’S LEG CAUGHT IN MACHINERY

Potter County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call regarding a workplace accident on the Crawford Ranch, an oil well drilling site on North U.S. Highway 287, outside of Amarillo. According to Sheriff Brian Thomas, Elston’s leg had become entangled in the machine he was using to dig a ditch around the oil rig, and although first responders provided emergency medical services at the site of the accident, the worker succumbed to his injuries. “It tore him up pretty bad,” Thomas said about the ditch-digging machine.

According to Apache Corp. Public Affairs Senior Adviser Bill Mintz, the deceased worker was an independent contractor working for an Oklahoma-based oil field service company called Redneck Services, which was doing work for Apache at the time of the job-site accident. Redneck offers spill control services at oil sites, and according to owner Jimmy Rhoades, the ditch being dug around the drilling rig was a common “pro-active” measure taken by oil companies in the event of a spill.
