NHTSA Launches Distracted Driving Campaign To Curb Car Accident Deaths

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a National Distracted Driving Enforcement campaign earlier this month, using advertisements and aggressive ticketing protocols in an effort to raise awareness about and reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities from distracted driving accidents. If you have suffered injuries in a car accident in Texas you believe was caused by a distracted driver, contact our experienced car accident lawyers at Bandas Law Firm today for legal help. You may have grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit against the person found at-fault in the accident, in order to pursue the financial compensation you deserve for your injuries, medical bills, and pain and suffering.

FATALITIES FROM DISTRACTED DRIVING ACCIDENTS

The NHTSA’s “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” campaign was announced by the U.S. Transportation Authority’s Secretary Anthony Foxx on April 2, and outlines the intention of local law enforcement agencies to aggressively ticket drivers seen texting or using their mobile devices while behind the wheel. According to Secretary Foxx, the distracted driving campaign was launched in response to national statistics indicating that 3,154 people were killed in accidents involving distracted drivers in 2013 alone, and that most of the drivers were believed to have been distracted while texting or using a mobile device. Statistics also showed that an additional 421,000 people suffered car accident injuries in 2013, in all “distracted-affected” incidents.

DISTRACTED DRIVING AMONG TEENAGE DRIVERS

It was determined that action needed to be taken to curb the risk of distracted driving accidents across the United States after the NHTSA found that 10% of all drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 who were involved in fatal auto accidents in 2013, were reported as distracted at the time of the accident. “Young people need to understand the dangers of texting and driving before it kills them or someone they love,” said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind in a recent press release. “It’s up to us as parents to set the right example by never texting and driving ourselves, and by laying down the law for our young drivers: no texting behind the wheel or no keys to the car.”

OUR QUALIFIED CAR ACCIDENT ATTORNEYS CAN HELP

There are already 45 U.S. states, as well as Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that have banned text messaging for all drivers, and fourteen of those states and territories prohibit drivers from using any handheld devices while behind the wheel. And, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health, states with bans on texting while driving saw considerable reductions in hospitalizations as a result of distracted driving accidents from 2003 to 2010. If you lost a loved one in a distracted driving car accident in Corpus Christi, or elsewhere in Texas, contact our wrongful death attorneys at Bandas Law Firm today to discuss your legal options.
