A confidential settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed on behalf of Michael Shelton, a 29-year-old worker who suffered injuries in a 2011 oilfield accident that took place in Cuero, Texas. The lives of Texas oilfield workers, who frequently work with heavy machinery on the job, are put at risk on a daily basis, just by showing up to work. Unfortunately, when employers, contractors and other parties fail to ensure that the job site is a safe and healthful place for workers, the consequences can be devastating, and possibly even deadly. Oilfield Worker Crushed by Crane Load
At the time of the oilfield accident, Michael Shelton was working as a roughneck involved in the rigging up process on a Cuero, Texas oil well site, and was employed by Big E Drilling Company, the company drilling the well for Petrohawk Energy Corporation, the operator of the lease. Fowler Transportation, Ltd., the defendant named in the lawsuit, was the company responsible for moving the rig. According to his lawsuit, Shelton suffered severe injuries when the roof of a mud tank was being positioned with a Kobelco CK 1000-II crane owned and operated by Fowler Transportation. The roof reportedly detached from its support legs and fell on Shelton, crushing him and pinning him to the floor of the mud tank, resulting in him injuries.
Defendant Accused of Failing to Safely Operate Equipment
Shelton’s lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division. The complaint alleged that Fowler Transportation and its employees failed to safely operate the crane that resulted in Shelton’s extensive injuries. “We were pleased to reach this confidential settlement for Michael Shelton,” said Shelton’s attorney. “Safety for workers in the oil field is paramount. Safety considerations must be the number one priority in crane operations and when you have workers from multiple companies working together on the same job.”
