Child Killed, Several Injured In Accident With Distracted Semi-Truck Driver

trucking accidentOfficials with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating a tragic four-vehicle trucking accident on Highway 290 in Houston late last month, that killed one child and severely injured several other people. According to police, the deadly Texas trucking accident was allegedly caused by the driver of a semi-truck who was distracted by his cell phone in the moments before the wreck occurred. According to Texas Department of Public Safety investigators, the fatal trucking accident took place when the driver of a tractor-trailer looked down at his cell phone while traveling eastbound in the outside lane of Highway 290. When he looked up, traffic ahead of him was slowed or near a complete stop, and he didn’t have time to apply the brakes before slamming into the back of a Kia Optima occupied by a 40-year-old woman and her two young children. DPS officials report that the impact between the semi-truck and the Kia was so severe that the back bumper of the Kia was actually pushed into the front seat of the vehicle. After being struck by the 18-wheeler, the Kia, in turn, rear-ended a Ford truck and that Ford then collided with a fourth vehicle.

Authorities investigating the devastating trucking accident in Houston report that the driver of the Kia was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center, along with her daughter, who suffered a fractured skull in the collision. Tragically, the woman’s son, who was between eight and ten years old, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
